Introduction
Bupa IHI – Global Health Insurance Coverage
Founded in the 1970’s as IHI Danmark, and purchased by Bupa in 2005, this insurance company was rebranded as IHI-Bupa in 2009, and further rebranded to Bupa ihi from July 1st 2014.
IHI Danmark was initially part of the Danish National Healthcare system which, at the time, was called Danmark. When a Danish expatriate, working as a sea captain in the Mauritius, was concerned about his lack of coverage under the Danish National Healthcare system due to his overseas status he wrote to Danmark to identify his health insurance options overseas.
From this very basic beginning Danmark quickly realized that there was a fundamental need for international health insurance coverage options which were designed specifically for the needs of expatriates.
Initially only providing coverage to Danish Nationals living abroad, by 1979 the company had expanded its policy options to a multitude of nationalities and the entity International Health Insurance Danmark a/s was founded to focus on the healthcare and insurance needs of expatriates of all nationalities living outside of their home countries.
International Health Insurance Danmark was then purchased by the private equity fund EQT in the 1990’s, continuing to operate under the brand IHI.
In 2005 IHI had grown to such an extent, and was providing coverage options of such high quality, that leading British based international insurance provider, Bupa, bought all of IHI’s operations.
In 2009, to reflect the new ownership, this historic insurance company became IHI-Bupa, and continues to provide some of the highest quality global medical insurance plans in the world.
